Living in Another State? You Can Still Get Free Ration Without Making a New Ration Card Under ONORC 2026

Image
Moving to another state for employment or better opportunities does not mean you have to leave your government ration benefits behind. Millions of Indians migrate from their hometowns every year, but many continue to face difficulties accessing essential food supplies because their ration cards are registered in their home states. To make things easier, the central government introduced the One Nation, One Ration Card (ONORC) system , which allows eligible beneficiaries to collect their entitled food grains from participating Fair Price Shops across the country. Under this facility, people who relocate for work, education or other reasons can generally continue receiving their ration benefits without applying for a new ration card in their new state. For example, someone whose ration card is registered in Bihar can potentially collect their entitled food grains from an authorised ration shop in Maharashtra, Delhi or another participating state. This facility has become particularly imp...

Image

Can Your Housing Society Control What You Do Inside Your Own Flat? Uorfi Javed’s Dispute Highlights a Growing Problem for Indian Residents

Image
Imagine renting an apartment, paying your monthly rent, following the building's rules, and still being told that you cannot record videos inside your own living room. Even more surprisingly, imagine your guests being stopped at the entrance simply because they are carrying cameras or professional equipment. It may sound unusual, but this is the kind of situation that actress and social media personality Uorfi Javed claims to have experienced in Mumbai. Her recent dispute with a housing society has raised an important question for millions of Indians living in apartments: How much authority does a housing society actually have over activities inside a resident's private home? The issue is particularly relevant today because homes are no longer used only for sleeping, eating, and spending time with family. Many people now work remotely, run online businesses, create YouTube videos, and earn money through social media. As a result, the traditional boundaries between residential a...

‘Non-Refundable’ Parking Deposit Must Be Returned If Society Cannot Justify Retention, Court Rules

Image
A housing society cannot simply keep a member’s money by calling it a “non-refundable” deposit . If the society wants to retain the amount, it must be able to show a valid legal basis for doing so. In a recent ruling, a Co-operative Court made this clear while ordering a housing society in Mumbai’s Kandivali West to return ₹50,000 to a couple, along with interest. The case involved RNA Regency Park Tower Co-operative Housing Society and its members, Jignesh Khiraiya and Kusum K Khiraiya . The court directed the society to refund ₹50,000 with 6% simple interest per year . The interest is to be calculated from January 30, 2022, the date on which the society received the couple’s written demand for repayment, until the amount is fully recovered. The society was also ordered to pay the couple’s legal expenses. How the dispute began The dispute dates back to June 2017, when the couple transferred their flat in the housing society. As part of the process, they paid ₹75,000 as a deposit for ...

Image
Husband and Wife Bought a House Together, but the Court Gave Full Ownership to the Wife: Why Kerala High Court Ruled in Her Favour

Image
Buying a house is one of the biggest financial decisions a family makes. Many couples register their property in both names, believing that joint registration automatically guarantees equal ownership. However, a recent ruling by the Kerala High Court highlights an important legal point: property ownership disputes can depend on the registered documents, financial contributions, and evidence presented before the court. In the case of Kurudankandi Shamsheer v. Raslin , the court ruled in favour of the wife in a dispute over a jointly registered house. The court directed the husband to vacate the property within three months. A key factor was evidence showing that the wife's father had provided money for the purchase, while the husband failed to prove his claim that he had contributed financially. The decision highlights why families should maintain clear financial records when buying property, particularly when parents or relatives provide financial assistance. How Did the Property D...
