Received Unexpected Money on UPI? 7 Smart Steps to Protect Yourself Before Sending It Back
Digital payments have made sending and receiving money easier than ever. With UPI, a transaction can be completed within seconds, whether you are paying a shopkeeper, splitting a restaurant bill or transferring money to a friend. But what happens when an unknown person suddenly sends money to your account and asks you to return it?
You might receive a call or message saying, “I transferred money to you by mistake. Please send it back immediately.” The amount may appear in your bank account, making the request seem genuine.
However, before transferring anything, take a moment to understand the situation. Although genuine payment mistakes happen, scammers may also use confusing payment requests, fake screenshots or misleading instructions to trick people into sending money.
Here are seven important steps to follow if an unknown person claims to have accidentally transferred money to your UPI account.
1. Verify the Payment Independently
Never rely only on a screenshot, SMS forwarded by a stranger or a message claiming that a payment has been completed.
Open your bank's official application or UPI app and check the transaction history. Confirm whether the amount has actually been credited to your account.
Look at the transaction date, amount, reference number and available sender information. If the details are unclear, check your bank statement or contact your bank.
If there is no matching credit, do not send money to the person. A convincing screenshot does not prove that a transaction occurred.
If the money is visible in your account, remember that this confirms the credit, but it does not automatically establish why the money was sent or whether the stranger's refund instructions are safe.
2. Avoid Making a Quick Decision
A person asking for a refund may sound worried or desperate. They might claim that the money is needed urgently for a medical emergency, a family expense or another important payment.
While the situation could be genuine, emotional pressure should not determine your next step.
Do not spend the unexpected amount while the issue remains unresolved. Keep the transaction details and give yourself enough time to contact your bank.
A legitimate payment mistake should be addressed, but you do not have to follow an unverified refund method simply because the sender insists on an immediate transfer.
3. Understand Why QR Codes Can Be Risky
One warning sign is a stranger sending you a QR code and asking you to scan it to receive or process a refund.
QR codes can be used for legitimate payments, but scanning one does not automatically mean you will receive money. It may open a payment interface where you are asked to pay the other person.
If you proceed and enter your UPI PIN to authorise the transaction, money could leave your account.
Remember: Receiving money through UPI does not require you to enter your UPI PIN. Your PIN is used to authorise payments from your account.
Be careful with unfamiliar payment links and collect requests as well. Before approving any transaction, read the amount, recipient details and purpose displayed on your screen.
Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, banking password or card details with someone claiming to help you receive a refund.
4. Ask the Sender to Resolve the Issue Through Their Bank
If the sender genuinely transferred money to the wrong account, they should contact their bank or UPI service provider to report the mistake.
You can politely explain that the transaction is visible in your account and that you want to resolve the matter through the proper procedure.
Contact your own bank through its official customer-care channel. Explain that an unknown person has transferred money to your account and is asking for it back.
Ask the bank how the transaction should be handled and whether a formal complaint or bank-coordinated reversal is appropriate.
Avoid sending the money to a different UPI ID or bank account supplied by the stranger without proper verification. The safest process depends on the circumstances, so follow your bank's guidance rather than relying on the sender's instructions alone.
5. Be Careful If the Sender Changes Their Instructions
Suppose someone says they accidentally sent you ₹2,000. After you confirm that the money has arrived, they ask you to return ₹2,000 to a different UPI ID.
This change in instructions deserves caution.
Even when the original payment is genuine, you should not assume that transferring money to another account is the correct way to resolve the issue. Contact your bank and explain the request before taking action.
Also, do not approve an unfamiliar collect request just because the sender says it is necessary to reverse the payment.
Read every payment screen carefully. If anything appears inconsistent, stop and seek guidance from your bank.
6. Preserve Evidence and Report Suspicious Activity
Keeping a clear record of the incident can help if the payment later becomes part of a financial dispute or fraud investigation.
Save the original transaction details, bank alerts, relevant messages, screenshots and call records. If you communicate with your bank, retain any complaint or reference number provided.
If you suspect that the unexpected payment is connected to a scam, report your concerns to your bank promptly.
In India, suspected cybercrime can be reported through the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. If you have lost money because of suspected financial cyber fraud, you can also contact the national cybercrime helpline at 1930.
Do not assume that every unexpected payment is fraudulent. Instead, document what happened and allow the appropriate authorities or your bank to help establish the facts.
7. Know What to Do If You Have Already Sent the Money
If you have already transferred money to the stranger and now suspect fraud, contact your bank immediately.
Explain the original payment, the amount you returned, the recipient details and why you believe the transaction may be suspicious. Provide any evidence you have saved.
If money has been lost to suspected financial cyber fraud, report it promptly through the official cybercrime channels. Quick reporting may help the authorities take appropriate action, although recovery is not guaranteed.
Do not send additional money to someone who claims that another payment, processing fee or verification transfer is required to recover your funds.
Keep all records and follow the instructions provided by your bank and the relevant authorities.
Why Staying Calm Matters
An unexpected UPI credit can create confusion, especially when the sender repeatedly asks for an urgent refund. The key is to separate the actual transaction from the instructions given by the stranger.
A real payment appearing in your account is important evidence, but it is not a reason to ignore basic security precautions.
Verify the credit, avoid spending the money while the issue is unresolved, do not scan suspicious QR codes, and contact your bank before deciding how to return the funds.
The goal is not to refuse every refund request. It is to resolve a genuine payment mistake without exposing yourself to an avoidable financial risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can someone steal money from my account simply by sending me money through UPI?
Receiving a UPI payment does not, by itself, authorise the sender to withdraw money from your account. However, scammers may try to persuade you to approve a payment, enter your PIN or disclose sensitive information. Never authorise an unfamiliar transaction.
2. Is a screenshot proof that someone has transferred money?
No. A screenshot or message alone is not sufficient proof. Check the transaction directly through your bank's official app, UPI transaction history or bank statement.
3. What if the sender asks me to return the money to another account?
Do not automatically follow that instruction. Contact your bank, explain the circumstances and follow its guidance on the appropriate way to resolve the payment.
4. Should I ignore the money if it genuinely arrived by mistake?
No. Keep the amount untouched while you clarify the situation and contact your bank. Follow the appropriate process to resolve the unexpected credit rather than ignoring it or spending the money.
5. Where can I report UPI-related cyber fraud in India?
You can report suspected cybercrime at cybercrime.gov.in. If you have lost money to suspected financial cyber fraud, call 1930 as soon as possible and inform your bank.
